The secretary general and leader United Democratic Party (UDP) .Lawyer Ousainou Darboe has dismissed in a press statement on Friday 17 / 05 / 2019 on the rumor that the party is preparing for a protest as the 3-year proposed term that coalition leaders agreed with President Adama Barrow coming to finish .

The streets were full with rumors that members of the UDP were preparing to stage a protest demanding for President Barrow to step down after 3 years, as agreed with the Coalition members.

Mr. Barrow and his coalition members had campaigned for a 3-year term, for anyone who became president before they can all return to their various parties for another election but since he came to power in 2016, President Barrow changed his position and declared intention to finish the 5 years mandate as dictated by the country’s constitution.

The 3-year team debate led to the creation of a movement call “3 years Jotna” meaning after 3 years Mr. Barrow term will will end . The movement say it will take the protest to the streets to demand for Mr. Barrow to respect the agreement and step dawn .

In the statement, Mr. Darboe said UDP is not organizing any political event or gathering in any part of the country, contrary to the rumors and allegations that it is organizing a protest. “UDP is a responsible and mature political party and not a protest movement. Whenever political events are organized, the party ensures that all the necessary permits are obtained in good time.”

Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara born on16 May 1924 , is a Gambian politician who was a significant national leader of The Gambia, serving as its Prime Minister from 1962 to 1970, and then as its first President from 1970 to 1994.

Jawara was born in Barajally, MacCarthy Island Division, the son of Mamma Fatty and Almami Jawara. He was educated at the Methodist Boys’ School in Bathurst ( Banjul ) and then attended Achimota College in Ghana. He trained as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Glasgow‘s School of Veterinary Medicine and then completed his training at the University of Liverpool. He returned to The Gambia in 1953 and married Augusta Mahoney, beginning work as a veterinary officer. He decided to enter politics and became secretary of the new People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1960 election. He became the leader of the ( PPP ) and then the country’s first Prime Minister in 1962, only the second ever head of government following Pierre Sarr N’Jie‘s term as Chief Minister.

Under Jawara, The Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965. He remained as Prime Minister and Elizabeth II remained as head of state as Queen of the Gambia. In 1970, The Gambia became a republic, with no monarchy, and Jawara was elected as its first President. The greatest challenge to Jawara’s power came in 1981 when an attempted coup d’état took place and soldiers from neighbouring Senegal were forced to intervene, with 400 to 800 deaths reported by the end of the coup attempt. Following the coup attempt, Jawara and Senegalese President Abdou Diouf announced the creation of the Senegambia Confederation, but it collapsed in 1989.

Jawara continued to rule until 1994 when a coup d’état led by Yahya Jammeh seized power. Following this, he went into exile, but returned in 2002, and now lives in retirement in The Gambia. At age of 95, he is currently the oldest living former Gambian president in the Country .

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani had allocated $ 480 million to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

“This support comes from the bonds of brotherhood and the ties of Arabism (العروبة ) and religion between the Palestinian and The Qatari people , in order to help the brotherly Palestinian people achieve their vital life needs in the difficult circumstances imposed on them by the Israeli occupation forces ,” a Qatari Foreign Ministry statement said on Monday. The Israeli occupation forces and the decline of international humanitarian support to them and their United Nations programs, and the continued inability of the Palestinian economy to perform its role required because of what has faced over the past years of crises and challenges.
The State of Qatar has allocated $ 300 million in grants and loans to support the health and education budget of the Palestinian Authority and $ 180 million to provide urgent humanitarian support, as well as to support UN programs in Palestine and support electricity services to ensure access to the various sectors of the Palestinian people , Especially during the holy month of Ramadan, and to meet the summer season where electricity is increasingly needed. “

Qatar called on the international community to “fulfill its humanitarian and moral responsibilities and help the Palestinian people” to overcome the humanitarian crisis it faces.

Doha reiterated its “full commitment to stand by the brotherly Palestinian people to obtain all their legitimate rights.”
