K.N.N 15 / 09 /2019 : The authorities , Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) , held an extraordinary summit on terrorism in the region yesterday, 14 September 2019 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The special summit aims to consider various initiatives taken to prevent and combat terrorism and redefine priority areas in line with the decision taken at the 55th Ordinary Session of the Commission held in Abuja, Nigeria on 29 June 2019.
In his welcoming speech, Burkina Faso President Roche Marc Christian Kaburi highlighted that in the light of the growing threat of terrorism in the region, cooperation and solidarity among nations have become imperative.
“That is why our countries must pool their human, material and intelligence resources and equip and train our defense and security forces to strengthen their operational capabilities in combating this scourge in West Africa” he said.
H.E. Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while highlighting the significant impact of terrorism on economic activities in the region and the fear it created among the citizens of society, stressed that The special summit is an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the collective elimination of terrorism in the region and to re-evaluate the regional counter-terrorism strategy.
